Note for:   Lewis Samuel Turner,   9 DEC 1910 - 11 APR 1980         Index

Individual Note:
Lewis had always believed he was born on Dec. 9, 1909. He searched all his life for a birth certificate or baptismal certificate to no avail. It was not until 1997 that his daughter located his baptismal certificate at The Church of the Ascension in Philadelphia, showing he was born Dec. 9, 1910 and bapt. Dec. 18, 1910. His godparents were Catherine and Peter McNamara. This was the first time his family learned that his mother had relatives in Philadelphia. Ironically, after his mother died he was raised a Protestant and his church in NJ was also named The Church of the Ascension. The baptismal certificate also showed that his name was Samuel Lewis Turner, not Lewis Samuel as he had believed.
Further research showed that he was descended from the Turners who had lived in the Morgan Stone House in Washington Township which is now a museum. The 3 generations that lived in the house were his great, great grandfather Meriall Turner (2nd), his great grandfather Robert Turner and his grandfather Lewis C. Turner.
He was also, descended from Benjamin Clark, an American Revolutionary Patriot who provided food for George Washington at Valley Forge. His home is now a National Historical Site. Benjamin was a descendant of William Clark who immigrated from Dublin Ireland.

Note for:   Clara Lucy Corbett,   20 APR 1876 - 1968         Index

Individual Note:
Clara as a young married woman, ran a small grocery store. She often told the story of the fish man coming to deliver the fish on a Friday and exclaming over her beautiful baby boy Leslie. The following Friday when the fish man came Leslie was dead. Her first child, son Alfred was reportedly 11 to 14 lbs in weight at birth. As young women in those days were kept ignorant of the facts of life, Clara had no idea of the process of birth. Previous to her delivery she had approached a midwife and asked her to attend her when her time came. At that time, the midwife asked her to turn over so she could examine her and Clara asked why, isn't the baby coming from the naval? "No dearie, Its coming out the same way it went in" replied the midwife. Clara claims she went a little crazy for a year following the birth and when her husband was away in India, she prayed he would not come home and get her pregnant again. She followed her husband to America in January, 1912, traveling with her friend Edith Hunt, wife of Harry Hunt. In October of 1912, her youngest daughter Hazel was born at 11 (or 13) Cheever St and the Hunts were her godparents. Clara had a "green thumb" and in her later years had extensive flower gardens at her home on Francis St. in Worcester and her son's home on Idella Rd.

Note for:   Samuel E. Turner,   30 AUG 1878 - 16 AUG 1918         Index

Individual Note:
Sam worked in Quigley lumberyard in Gloucester NJ. When his wife died and he was unable to take care of his children, he asked a co-worker, Harry Godfrey, if he knew of anyone who would be willing to board them. Harry told him his sister, a(maiden lady) would take the girl Viola. Sam asked Harry, "what about your wife, would she take the boy?" Aunt Mae agreed to try it for one weekend where upon she fell in love with Lew and kept him. When Sam died when Lew was 9 years old, Harry and Mae kept him and raised him like their own.
They did not attend his wedding, however, as they were angry he was getting married so young. They felt as they had raised him, he should work awhile and help them financially. They did reconcile as when times were really tough Hazel and Lew had to live with them for a while.

Samuel E. Turner, born August 1876 in Burlington County NJ, shown as age 23 and single on the 1900 census may be the correct Sam. Listed in Vl.6, ED. 18, Sheet 12, Line 4, 1900 NJ Census. This would mean he and Margaret were married after 1900.

Note for:   Margaret Mary McNamara,   22 AUG 1874 - 28 JUN 1912         Index

Individual Note:
Family story passed down to Margaret's son Lewis, by Mae Godfrey, with whom he lived, was that Margaret was estranged from her family for marrying an English Protestant. Mae stated, however, that the family wanted to raise Lewis after his mother's death, but Sam refused. When Sam died only a few years later all family records were lost. The Godfreys did not know how to contact either the McNamara or Turner families so they raised Lewis themselves. Lewis and Viola were raised knowing nothing of their family other than their grandparents names.

Margaret & Samuel were living at 2307 So. Millick St. Philadelphia, PA at the time she died. The infant in grave with her was Lillian M. Turner 3 1/2 months old. Also in grave is Patrick H. McNamara, her brother. Funeral mass was at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 56 & Chester St.s Philadelphia, burial at Holy Cross cemetery, Bailey Rd., Yeadon, PA Section T, Lot 34, grave 4.
